Master Replicas released this Yoda Limited Edition Lightsaber to coincide with the May
2005 release of Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. The Yoda ROTS model was
the first of the 2005 "open ended" Limited Editions to be retired, and the edition size of
2,900 was announced in October 2005.
Many dismissed this model as simply a rehash of the Yoda Attack of the Clones model,
but Master Replicas explained that the "prop" in Revenge of the Sith was different,
showing signs of battle damage and a darker stainless steel finish. You may notice that I
quoted the word prop - this is because unlike most of Master Replicas' models, there was
no physical prop created for the Yoda lightsaber. The Revenge of the Sith prop existed
solely inside the computer, a CGI rendering of the Jedi Master's weapon of choice.
Master Replicas was given access to the original ILM computer files and numerous
reference images were supplied by Lucasfilm.
For the 2005 models Master Replicas changed their packaging design, dropping the very
popular foam lined presentation case and combining all elements into one well designed
box. The new packaging is jet black emblazoned with the Revenge of the Sith logo in
brilliant red and it works very well, keeping all items secure during shipping. Removal is
straightforward, and included in the package are: the Lightsaber prop, mirrored display
stand, clear acrylic dust cover, certificate of authenticity and prop back-story, Limited
Edition numbered plaque and black plastic plaque stand.
The Yoda ROTS LE is smaller than most Master Replicas props owing to the diminutive
stature of it's owner. It measures 6 3/4 inches from the hilt to the tip of the emitter shroud
and weighs a smidge over 1/2 a pound. Construction is entirely metal (even the grips,
which look rubber in photographs) with the exception of 2 green LEDs, one inside the
control box and one on the left side of the saber.
As mentioned before, the Yoda ROTS LE has a dark stainless steel finish and it looks
great. There are many "battle damage" scratches scattered around the saber body, the
grips and emitter shroud. The saber also shows signs of wear on the black areas, and it
just has that well-used look to it. It seems strange to be describing a brand new product
as worn and battered, but that is what MR was going for and they have pulled it off
effectively.
Many people were disappointed that MR released this model when it's look was so close
to the Attack of the Clones LE. While some of the criticisms were warranted, I think the
Revenge of the Sith model is different enough, with it's dark finish and battle scarring, to
make the release worthwhile. Many owners of this saber have it displayed as a Yoda vs
Darth Sidious dueling set, and it looks great in that setting.
