Luke Skywalker - A New Hope
Limited Edition Lightsaber

Master Replicas released their Luke Skywalker ANH LE as a Dealer Exclusive in January 2006, approximately 1 year after they released their Elite Edition of the same lightsaber.

There are going to be inevitable comparisons between the Limited Edition and Elite Edition version of this lightsaber, but they really are different beasts. The EE is made of premium materials and is based on publicity materials, whereas the LE is based on the screen-used saber.

The Luke Skywalker ANH LE is made of aluminum, brass and steel with chrome plated accents. Like the EE and the Luke ESB LE/SE that came before it, the ANH LE is based on an antique Graflex camera flash. A real Graflex was the base for the original filming prop, with rubber T-track added for grips and a 1970's 7 bubble calculator strip for the control box. Master Replicas has reproduced the look and feel of the Graflex nicely. For the LE the control box is on the left side of the saber, mimicking the saber used in A New Hope. The previous Elite Edition had the control box on the right side as seen in post-production publicity still from A New Hope.

The Luke ANH LE comes in a similar package design to the 2005 Revenge of the Sith lightsabers. There is a black slip cover with the MR logo, then a black box with the Star Wars logo. Inside that is a 2-piece Styrofoam construction that holds everything. Included with the Luke Skywalker ANH LE are : the Lightsaber prop, mirrored display stand, acrylic cover, prop back story and certificate of authenticity, limited edition number plaque, black plastic plaque stand and microfiber cleaning cloth.

Weighing in at 2lbs and measuring 10.5 inches long, the ANH LE feels solid in the hand but quite unwieldy. It's hard to imagine how the protagonists in Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back were able to perform their fight scenes so well, with the rubber grips attached the Graflex (or MPP in the case of Darth Vader's Sabers) is wide in the hand and just uncomfortable to grip. Compared to the sleek Prequel Trilogy lightsabers like the Obi-Wan TPM or Darth Sidious, they are just plain awkward in the hand.

However, Master Replicas LEs are for display not for play, and in that regard the Luke Skywalker ANH LE is a sight to behold. Under it's acrylic cover it looks like it should be in a Star Wars museum, the first activated lightsaber in movie history. From the riveted d-ring to the chrome plated "rabbit ears", the ANH LE is exactly what it should be - a true representation of the screen used lightsaber that we all remember so well.
