Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope sparked a generation of science fiction lovers and had them running to the theaters. With its growing popularity, it spawned a fan base bigger than any other movie in the history of cinematography. People loved everything about Star Wars; the movies, the costumes, the ships, and the lightsaber.

Darth Vader's lightsaber was the first one on screen, hanging on the side of his belt, like some mysterious sci-fi gadget. Most people didn't know what it was at first, but they saw it in action, when Darth Vader had the most memorable fight with his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The team at ILM needed to create something; a gadget that would stand up to the name lightsaber. With their task at hand, they searched around for spare parts that they could use to create this masterpiece. Vader's lightsaber is made from an old camera piece called an MPP flash gun. They then took what was presumably pieces of a windshield wiper, and added them on to the base of the flash gun to act as grips. They also added a bubble strip from an old LED display calculator to act as part of the activation box. Once completed, they had a lightsaber. Little did they know that this lightsaber will become part of history to Star Wars fans everywhere.

Master Replicas, who had purchased the license from Lucasfilm to mass produce prop replicas, were fortunate enough to get a hold of an original lightsaber that was used on film. Using high end materials, Master Replicas was able to create this incredible replica that will be displayed on my shelf, and many other Star Wars fans' shelves, for many years to come.

I would say that this is by far my favorite lightsaber to date. It reminds of a time when I was in high school and I was roaming around a Sharper Image and there in the distance, behind a glass case, was this lightsaber. I absolutely loved it! A movie prop brought to life in front of my very eyes. I knew I wanted it but of course I couldn't afford the hefty price tag that came with it. Years later, Master Replicas came out with their own rendition of it and I bought it. An amazing piece of work that no Star Wars fan should be without.

The length of the lightsaber is approximately 12 inches and it weighs approximately 1 1/2 pounds. It is definitely a lightsaber that you would need two hands to use; unless of course you're a dark lord of the Sith. What amazes me is how incredibly shiny the metal is. I have had the prop for over a year now and it is as shiny now as it was the day I got it, and I haven't polished it once. That is one of the biggest advantages I would say with having the museum style display case. It protects your props from any damage and it prevents people from just reaching over and grabbing it. This is definitely a worthy prop and a must have for any Star Wars prop collector.
